Wayne Irie – DJ, Radio Icon, and Sound System Pioneer
With a career spanning over four decades, Wayne Irie has solidified his place as one of the most influential DJs and selectors in the global reggae and sound system scene. From his early days selecting music for top-tier sound systems to performing on international stages, Wayne’s journey has been one of constant innovation, passion, and dedication to the craft.
In 1975, Wayne had crowds rocking to the sounds of Merritone, showcasing his natural talent behind the decks. By 1978, his reputation caught the attention of Duke Alloy Sound, who recruited Wayne to join their ranks. Under his leadership, the sound system soared to new heights, winning numerous trophies and gold discs, ultimately earning the prestigious title of King Alloy.
In 1989, Wayne took his talent to Canada, performing alongside Mikey Soul and Sonatone Sound in Toronto. His skill and energy were quickly recognized across the Canadian sound system community, leading to collaborations with some of Canada’s finest, including King Turbo, Soul to Soul, and even legendary NY sound system Downbeat.
Returning to the UK in 1990, Wayne continued his musical journey with the creation of New Sensation Sound in 1991, which remains a staple in the reggae sound system world today. Wayne and New Sensation Sound have played alongside some of the greatest Jamaican sound systems, including Bodyguard Sound, King Addies, Stonelove, Metro Media, Killamanjaro, and more. His influence even reached Miami, performing with icons like Tony Matterhorn, Fire Links, and Suzy Q.
